Reading water: where trout actually sit

Current seams, feeding lanes and the difference between water that looks good and water that holds fish. The skill that makes every other skill worth having.

Most people learning to fly fish spend their first season working on the cast. It is the visible skill, it is the one that looks hard, and it is the one everybody offers advice about. Meanwhile the thing that actually separates a good day from a blank one is quieter: knowing where to put the fly before you pick up the rod.

A trout in a river is solving a problem all day. It needs enough food to be worth the effort, it needs to not spend more energy holding position than it gains from eating, and it needs to not be eaten. Every fish you find will be sitting somewhere that answers all three at once. Learning to read water is learning to spot those places from the bank.

The three things a trout wants at once

Almost all river fishing comes back to this. A fish wants food, shelter from the full force of the current, and cover from anything that might eat it. Water that offers one of the three holds the occasional fish. Water that offers all three holds fish reliably and holds the better ones.

This is why a long featureless glide with even depth and even flow tends to be empty, even though it looks like a river should. There is nothing in it that solves the problem. And it is why a single boulder in an otherwise plain run is worth more casts than the fifty yards around it: the boulder creates slower water, the slower water sits next to faster water carrying food, and the rock itself is something to hide behind.

Seams: the single most useful thing to learn to see

A seam is the line where two different speeds of water meet. You can see them once you know to look: a crease on the surface, a line of bubbles, a strip of smooth water running alongside broken water, the edge of a foam line.

Seams matter because they are where the economics work out. Fast water carries food but costs energy to hold in. Slow water is cheap to sit in but delivers less. A fish holding in the slow side of a seam, inches from the fast side, gets the delivery without paying for it. That is the best seat in the river and something is usually in it.

Practical version: when you arrive at a piece of water, before anything else, find the seams. Foam lines are the easiest to spot and are genuinely useful, because foam collects where the surface converges and so does everything else floating. The old advice that foam is home is not folklore, it is just a visible marker of a convergence you would otherwise have to infer.

The features worth knowing by name

Riffles

Shallow, broken, fast water running over gravel and cobble. Riffles are where a lot of insect life lives, the broken surface hides fish from above, and the oxygen content is high. Fish in riffles are often actively feeding and are frequently easier to approach than fish in flat water, because the surface disturbance works both ways: they cannot see you clearly either. Newer anglers routinely walk straight through the riffle to get to the pool, which is a mistake.

Runs

Deeper than a riffle, still moving with purpose, usually with a defined seam or two along the edges and a consistent depth down the middle. Runs are the bread and butter of river fishing. If you only learn to fish one type of water properly, make it the run, because it is the most common productive water on most rivers and it rewards a good drift more than a clever fly.

Pools

The deep slow water below a run. Pools hold fish, especially larger ones and especially when the river is low, warm or under pressure. They are also the hardest water to fish well: the flow is slow enough that a fish gets a long unhurried look at your fly, and slow enough that any drag on the line shows up immediately. Beginners are drawn to pools because the fish are visible. That visibility cuts both ways.

Pocket water

Boulder-strewn chaos, with small patches of calm behind and in front of rocks. Each pocket is potentially a fish, and the fishing is close-range and fast: a short cast, a drift of two or three feet, then move. Pocket water is forgiving of imperfect casting and unforgiving of standing still, and it is often the least-pressured water on a busy river because it does not look like a postcard.

Undercut banks and structure

Overhanging banks, submerged logs, root wads and the shade under a bridge all provide cover. Bigger fish trade open feeding lanes for security, and a bank that is being actively eroded on the outside of a bend frequently has a shelf under it that is deeper than it looks. Casting tight to structure loses flies. It also finds the fish that other people walked past.

The front of the pocket, not just the back

One correction worth making early, because almost everybody gets it backwards. When water hits a rock, it piles up and slows down in front of the rock as well as behind it. The cushion in front is often better holding water than the eddy behind, because it is fed directly by everything the current is carrying.

Fish the upstream side of boulders. It feels wrong the first few times and it catches fish.

Depth changes and the drop-off

Anywhere the riverbed changes depth abruptly is worth attention. The lip at the head of a pool, the shelf where a riffle drops into a run, the trench along the outside of a bend. A change in depth means a change in speed, which means a seam, often an invisible one below the surface rather than a visible one on it.

You can read these from the surface with practice. Water slows and smooths as it deepens, and it accelerates and wrinkles as it shallows. A tongue of smooth dark water in the middle of a broken shallow run is telling you there is a slot down there.

Water temperature decides where in the river to look

The same river holds fish in different places through the year, and temperature is the main reason. Trout are cold-blooded, with a preferred range, and they will move to find it.

  • Cold water slows their metabolism. Fish hold in deeper, slower water, they feed less and less often, and a fly needs to come closer to them because they will not move far for it.
  • Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen. Fish move to riffles, to broken oxygenated water, to spring seeps and to the cooler water where a tributary comes in.

This is why the same run can be excellent in June and empty in August, and why the angler carrying a cheap stream thermometer often does better than the one carrying an expensive fly selection. Once the water gets genuinely warm, playing a fish becomes a survival question for it rather than a sporting one, and the responsible answer is sometimes to stop. Colorado Parks and Wildlife publishes voluntary and mandatory closures for exactly this reason, and those are worth checking before a midsummer trip.

How to actually approach a piece of water

  1. Stop before you get to the water. Stand back and look for a minute. This is free and almost nobody does it.
  2. Find the seams and the depth changes. Pick the two or three spots that solve all three of the fish's problems at once.
  3. Work out where you need to stand to get a drag-free drift through the first of them, and how to get there without walking through the water you are about to fish.
  4. Fish the closest water first. Casting over a near fish to reach a far one spooks the near one for nothing. Work from near to far and from downstream to upstream.
  5. Give it a handful of drifts, then move. A fish that wanted it usually takes in the first few presentations. Twenty casts into the same slot mostly teaches the fish what your fly looks like.

Fish move less than you think

A trout holding in a feeding lane is not swimming around looking for your fly. It has a window, often a narrow one, and it will move a short distance for food that comes within it. In cold water that window shrinks to almost nothing.

This is the reason drift matters more than pattern. A well-chosen fly arriving two feet to the side of a fish, or dragging unnaturally, catches nothing. A mediocre fly arriving in the window at the right depth and moving at the speed of the current catches fish regularly. When you are not catching, the first question is almost never which fly. It is whether the fly is at the right depth, and whether it is moving like something real.

What to practise next

Pick one run. Fish it properly over several visits rather than covering a mile of river each time. Learn where the fish are in it at different flows and different times of year. That single piece of water will teach you more about reading rivers than any amount of reading about reading rivers, including this.
