What the water is like

Inside the park the water is small, high and intimate, and the fishing is about short accurate casts rather than distance. Below Estes Park the canyon water is larger and roadside, and it has been reshaped more than once by flooding.

Getting on it

Park water requires a park entrance pass and is subject to National Park Service rules, which differ from statewide regulations. Canyon water below is largely roadside with mixed public and private frontage.

Access arrangements are the single thing most worth confirming before you drive. Public frontage, parking, fees and seasonal closures all change, and on several Colorado rivers the boundary between public and private water is neither obvious nor forgiving. Check with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and, where the water runs through a national park or a federally managed area, with the agency that manages it.
