What the water is like

Open meadow water with defined bends and no tree cover, which means the fish see you coming and the wind is a genuine factor in what you can cast. Its reputation rests largely on fish that move up out of the reservoir below at certain times of year.

Getting on it

State Trust Land and State Wildlife Area parking along the road, walk-in from there. Access rules on surrounding land are not uniform and are worth confirming before you park.

Access arrangements are the single thing most worth confirming before you drive. Public frontage, parking, fees and seasonal closures all change, and on several Colorado rivers the boundary between public and private water is neither obvious nor forgiving. Check with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and, where the water runs through a national park or a federally managed area, with the agency that manages it.
