What to carry, how much of it, and how to organise it so you can find the right one in a wind on a bank.

What actually matters here

A fly selection is a set of answers to questions the river asks. The useful version is small, deliberate, and covers the situations you actually fish rather than the ones you have read about.

The single most common mistake is variety at the expense of quantity. Twenty patterns in one size each looks like preparedness and behaves like scarcity: the moment the one that works starts getting eaten or lost, you are out of it. Five patterns in three sizes and two weights is a far more capable box.

Organisation matters more than it sounds. A box you can read at a glance, in cold hands, with the wind trying to empty it, is worth more than a better selection you have to search.

What to look for

Boxes that hold flies securely when dropped. Foam that has gone soft stops gripping hooks, and slit foam holds better than pocked foam for larger patterns.
A size you will actually carry. A large box left in the car has no patterns in it at all.
Enough compartments to separate by type, not enough to require a system you will not maintain.
Quantity in the patterns you rely on, before variety in the ones you might.

When you do not need this

You do not need a dedicated box per category, and you do not need a large selection to start. One well-organised box covering the water you fish will out-fish four disorganised ones.
