What actually matters here

Boots are the one piece of fly fishing kit where buying cheap has a physical consequence. Grip on wet rock is what stops you going into cold moving water, and cold moving water is the thing on this site most likely to actually hurt you.

Fit does more for warm feet than insulation does. Oversized boots with thick socks beat tight boots with thicker socks every time, because circulation is what keeps feet warm and tight boots stop it.

All waders leak eventually. That is not a defect, it is a material reality, and the meaningful difference between makers is how straightforward it is to get a pair repaired rather than replaced.

What to look for

Sole grip suited to the substrate you fish. Studs add real bite on slick rock, and felt is restricted in some states as a biosecurity measure, so check before you buy.
A repair service and a warranty you can actually use.
Room for the socks you will genuinely wear in the coldest month you fish.
A wading belt, worn tight. It limits how much water gets in if you go over.

When you do not need this

In midsummer on smaller water you can start without waders at all. In Colorado, for most of the year, you cannot: the water is cold enough to limit an unprotected day to minutes.
