The things that are not fishing kit but decide whether the trip works: licence, access, water, and what is in the car.

What actually matters here

Most failed fishing trips are not failures of equipment. They are a licence nobody bought, a road that was closed, a river running four times its normal volume, or a stretch of bank that turned out to be private.

All of those are solvable from home in about ten minutes, and none of them is something you can fix once you have driven two hours. This category is that ten minutes, written down.

The other half is what lives in the car rather than in the pack: dry clothes, water, food, and the assumption that you will be out longer than planned.

What to look for

A current licence, and the regulations for the specific stretch. Some sections carry their own tackle restrictions that differ from the statewide rule.
The gauge for your actual reach, checked over the last week rather than today alone.
Current closures, especially in midsummer, when heat-related restrictions appear at short notice.
Dry clothes in the car. Not fishing kit, just dry clothes.

When you do not need this

You do not need a satellite communicator for roadside water. On genuinely remote reaches with no signal, it stops being a luxury.
